3 Key Factors For the Perfect Dining Room Chandelier

When choosing the perfect dining room chandelier and putting the finishing touches to the interior design of your home can be a very exciting task. This is the time where you get to go shopping for the final furnishings and accessories that really make your room scheme come alive. In the dining room the highlight, literally, has to be a stunning chandelier suspended above the dining table!

The good news is that chandeliers come in an array of many different materials and colors, styles, designs and sizes, often wowing as a one-of-a-kind lighting fixture. From traditional opulence to new, creative interpretations, these multi pendant lights are designed to form the crowning glory of any dining room.

Making the right choice of chandeliers can be daunting, which is why we’ve put together some useful advice to help you with the purchase of your perfect dining room chandelier and installation.

1. How much light does the room need?

Before you buy a new light fitting, particularly one as important as a chandelier, you should assess the light requirements of the room. Take a look at the amount of natural daylight entering the room and any existing lighting design elements for ambient, task and accent lighting to ensure that your new chandelier will be the perfect complement.

For dining rooms with existing recessed lighting or wall sconces, the need for additional lighting will be less than if your ceiling pendant is going to be the only artificial light source in the room. If the latter is the case, a strong statement with multiple light chandeliers should work extremely well.

In darker rooms with less natural light, you may want to consider a lighter glossy paint for the walls to reflect more of the reflective light. Depending on the type of fixture, you may be able to choose a chandelier or ceiling pendant that uses brighter bulbs for the perfect solution in a darker space.

If there is still not enough natural or reflective light, consider installing can or recessed lighting in each of the four corners of the dining room ceiling.

Hanging wall mirrors or choosing furniture with glass table tops can also add more reflective light.

Dimmer switches are a great idea to give you maximum flexibility – useful if your dining room is a multi-purpose space also used for watching TV, doing homework etc. But do check that the chandelier you have your eye on is a dimmable one – not all of them are. Some LED lighting fixtures may flicker when dimmed, while others won’t dim at all.

2. What’s the look you wish to achieve?

When it comes to luxurious chandeliers, looks are everything. And with such a wealth of choice available when it comes to designs and styles, it’s only a matter of time until you find one that you love and that perfectly fits with the interior design of your dining room. If you’re looking for a traditional crystal chandelier, select from classic candle styles, tiered crystal designs or ornate bowl-shaped designs. Glass crystals have a magical and mysterious quality about them. Provided you look after your crystal chandelier properly, it will keep on sparkling as alluringly as on the first day, adding elegance and grandeur to the surroundings.

For a contemporary home, your new chandelier is the perfect opportunity to make a dramatic statement. Whether you choose a sleek and simple lighting solution, a modern or industrial look, or go for something more quirky and unique, perhaps made from unusual materials, the option is there to let your personality shine through.

3. How to get the right size, shape and height?

Having made your style decision – traditional, contemporary or all-out creative – the next step to choosing the perfect dining room chandelier is to look at your dining room dimensions, including ceiling height, and any existing furniture and furnishings to make sure you choose the perfect dining room chandelier that’s the right shape and size.

Round or square dining tables will look best with a bowl-shaped or round chandelier, while oblong or rectangular dining tables would benefit from linear suspension or island pendant styles that distribute the light more evenly, or alternatively two round chandeliers side by side.

The size of your chandelier should be in proportion to the table. Too small and it won’t have the impact you’re looking for, too large and it will dominate the room. As a general rule, the light fitting should be a third to half the diameter of the dining table – so a 2m round table would take a chandelier that measures 65cm to 1m across.

Finally, when it comes to installation, it’s highly recommended that you get a professional to do this for you. Make sure that there is a region of 60-90cm of space between the table and the bottom of the chandelier, to provide optimum illumination for the table without blinding your guests or obstructing their view.

Now that you know the basics of choosing the perfect dining room chandelier or ceiling pendant, go have fun shopping!
