Chandelier Ideas for the Kitchen

Paging through the kitchen and bath design magazines have you noticed the number of kitchens of the rich and famous that feature chandeliers? Well, kitchen chandeliers are not just for the very wealthy, they are becoming a popular type of lighting fixture for all kinds of kitchens.

Some are very elegant with crystal glitz and glamour, but many chandeliers are not all that ostentatious. Unique chandeliers add a sort of stately charm that creates a certain elegance to any room — including the kitchen.

Chandelier Styles

If you decide to add a chandelier to your kitchen you will without a doubt be a little intimidated by the sheer number of styles and materials you will see. There’s a chandelier for any style kitchen. Some of the most popular and appropriate are the glass and iron type often seen in traditional and Old World style kitchens. The electric candle style chandeliers, minus the crystal, are just the ticket for a Colonial or Federal style kitchen. All of the metal and glass chandeliers are popular – but particularly the bronze, black iron, or copper with their deep rich patina for traditional, country, and Old World style kitchens.

If you have a contemporary or modern kitchen, you don’t have to be left out, there’s many styles that will work for you too. There are some that are quite minimalist in design and others with lines that would work very well in contemporary kitchens. Chrome and nickel are a very good choice for contemporary or modern kitchens.

Wildwood Lamps has a variety of chandeliers  for the kitchen.   A chandelier in the kitchen will often be your focal point. A chandelier is a bit of a showpiece and they tend to be somewhat of a scene-steal-er because wherever they go they demand a certain amount of respect and adoration.

Tips for using a Chandelier in the Kitchen

Match the chandelier’s style to your interior design style. Consider the design of your cabinetry, moldings and details such as knobs and pulls. Is it elegant? Classic? Sleek? Remember there is some overlap in style compatibility and it also depends on how eclectic your design personality is. Art Deco can work wonderfully with contemporary, for instance.

1) Separate Dimmer Control Switch

Install a dimmer control to the chandelier on a separate switch. Don’t put all of your lighting on this switch so you have plenty of control how much light you want and need from your chandelier and can change the mood of the room. If you find your chandelier a bit too harsh or glary this will make all the difference—fine tune it.

2) Breakfast Nook or Kitchen Island Chandelier?

There are two places for the chandelier. The island area is one and the breakfast nook or other eating area is the other. If over the island, make sure to hang your chandelier between 30 and 34 inches above the island and remember to add 3 inches height for every foot of ceiling height if your ceilings are over 8 feet. For the best effect the chandelier over a table should be approximately a foot narrower than the table, and there should be a distance of at least 4 feet between the walls and the chandelier on all sides.

3) Measure Chandelier Size

If your kitchen is rather small remember proportion matters — don’t buy a big chandelier for a small kitchen. Chandeliers today are available in lots of shapes and sizes. Whether you are buying over the Internet or in a store measuring is crucial.
