7 Considerations for a Kitchen Remodeling Project

There comes a time in the life of any home when a kitchen remodel becomes necessary. You might have bought your home with the kitchen already finished and furnished so you had no freedom in making it fit your needs and preferences. If this situation is becoming more and more inconvenient or the kitchen is simply no longer up-to-date, there is always the option of upgrading it.

In fact, besides bathrooms, kitchen remodels are the most frequent projects homeowners undertake, and for a good reason. The kitchen is the room in the house that sees the most traffic, and its functionality affects your efficiency as well in your everyday life. So, there’s no doubt that it’s more than worth investing in it if you have the funds. In order to make the most of this endeavor, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

1. Determine your budget

While this is certainly not the most fun part of planning your new kitchen, it is crucial that you know exactly how much money you can invest in this project. Unforeseen circumstances can arise while doing the remodel, and you don’t want to end up with a debt. For instance, when installing new appliances, you might find out that there is a problem with the plumbing and you might need to buy some parts such as gate valves as they wore out due to corrosion. This is why it’s recommended that you add 10% of your budget to an emergency fund for peace of mind.

2. See what stays and what goes

You don’t necessarily have to knock the whole place down to the ground if you want to give a new look to your kitchen. In fact, the more you can keep it the same, the better. If you don’t have too large of a budget, forget about moving the sink across the room. It’s the most affordable if the plumbing and wiring don’t have to be changed. The same goes for your cabinets – if they are not completely unusable, you can do so many things to give them a new look. New copper handles, for instance, will give them a sophisticated look, or repainting them in a trendy color will liven up the entire space.

3. Think about the space and the arrangement

In many people’s mind, there might be a concept that the more space there is, the better. However, unless you organize huge family reunions weekly, you probably won’t need the workspace to be that large. In fact, making the space between the counter and the island too broad will only make the kitchen less functional, as you will constantly need to walk back and forth. It is usually recommended that you make an equilateral triangle with the placement of your fridge, range and sink. Try to keep your own family’s needs in mind when deciding on the distance.

4. Make it family-friendly

If you often spend a lot of time in the kitchen, preparing meals, a closed-off kitchen can feel lonely and boring. So, why not knock down the walls (after confirming that they are not weight-bearing walls) and create an open plan that merges your kitchen with your dining or living room? If you don’t want to go that far, it is also a great idea to incorporate a breakfast bar that will allow the family to spend mornings together and chat while preparing breakfast. The only prerequisite for this addition is that you, indeed, have enough space.

5. Light it up

Every room deserves ample illumination and the kitchen is no exception. Poor lighting will not only make it difficult to see exactly what you are doing but it will also wreak havoc on your eyes. Not to mention that an added bonus of a well-lit kitchen is that it immediately looks more spacious, airy and more modern. Overhead lights will not be enough to achieve this effect, though. So, when dealing with your cabinets, think about built-in task lights that will shed light on your workspace and make the kitchen more functional.

6. Switch to energy-efficient appliances

You don’t renovate your kitchen every day, so if you’re already doing it, it would be the perfect time to swap one or two of your most energy-hungry appliances to more energy-efficient equivalents. Electric ranges, freezers, refrigerators and dishwashers are on the top of the list when it comes to kitchen appliances that cost you the most electricity. So, finding an Energy Star rated model and making an investment that will pay off in both reduced electricity bills and smaller harm to the environment is a great idea.

7. Look into current trends when it comes to materials

Choosing the materials for your new kitchen is one of the most crucial steps in planning the project as it will greatly determine the longevity of the newly renovated space. It’s always a great idea to check current trends as they both reflect what’s stylish and what’s functional and durable. For instance, marble is still a top choice as it is simply timeless – it’s a great option for both countertops and backsplashes, especially if you want to keep the color palette to a minimum. When considering the flooring, both ease of maintenance and comfort should be taken into account: after all, stone might be very durable but it’s not so pleasant to stand on. This does not mean you have to say goodbye to nice-looking floors – with today’s technology, you can get laminate or vinyl floors that look just like hardwood.

Planning your kitchen remodel project is no easy feat, but in the end, it’ll all pay off as you’ll be able to enjoy a both more functional and more stylish space together with your family.
