TABLE LAMPS FOR LIVING ROOM, BEDROOM, & OFFICE:

Lighting sets the stage for your room, it creates a mood. It can be dramatic, romantic, or no-nonsense, but it should always be welcoming.

Table lamps do this and more. They give a soft glow to a dark corner, or accent a mantel, work of art or table. They help break a large room into smaller spaces and define areas of your room such as a reading area and a conversation area. And, of course, they provide the light you need to read the newspaper or the latest novel by your favorite author. They are certainly the most popular form of lighting for nearly every room in the house.

FineHomeLamps.com has hundreds of lamps to choose from so you are certain to find the lamp that is just the right style, size, and color for your space. Whether you are looking for a lamp for the living room, bedroom, or even a dining space you will find the perfect table lamp.

Tips for Choosing an End Table Lamp

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is – what height should my end table lamp be? In general, these lamps should be between 58-64″ in height from the floor. And, most all table and floor lamps should fall within this height range. It gives a nice flow to the room.

So – if you have a table that is 30″ in height, the table lamp should typically be between 28″- 34″ (to top of finial). Also, consider that when you are in a seated position – your eyes should not be looking at the socket or bulb.

Testing Size and Shape

Place an existing lamp on the table where you want to add a new lamp. Put books or other under the existing lamp to make it taller to compare with potential new lamp – if applicable.

Lampshade Size & Shape

When determining the best size table lamp, it is important to compare the size of the table to the diameter of the lampshade. The width or depth of the lamp shade needs to be no larger than the narrowest dimension of the table. Otherwise, the lampshade would hang over the edge of the table – and that is not usually desirable. This is typically an issue for buffet lamps or bedside lamps where the depth of the table is narrow.

Lampshades are also important features of a table lamp – and greatly affect its style. In most cases, an angled-side or cone shape lampshade expresses a more traditional style and a vertical-side or drum shape expresses a more contemporary or modern style. If you want to update your traditional lamp –  consider changing the shade to a drum style lampshade.

Finding lamps for a dresser, bedside table, or buffet table can require special attention because these surfaces are narrow – generally between 16” and 20” in depth.

  • Shade Depth (front to back): Generally 14″ – 18″
  • Lamp Height for Bedside Table Lamp: Generally 26″ – 33″
  • Lamp Height for Dresser Table:  Generally 18″ – 27″

Lamps with rectangular or oval shades often make good bedside lamps because they are narrow in depth, yet they provide the width to visually anchor the space on each side of the bed.

Style – To Match or Not To Match?

You may decide to “match” or “not match” the style of the lamp with the furniture or architecture – depending on your objective.  Some designers make it a point to NOT EXACTLY match the table lamp style with the furniture style.

Imagine a late Victorian lamp with Late Victorian furniture. Yet, the lamp style may or may not – could still be within the Traditional family, but will still need to relate in some manner to the context of the space – in terms of size, shape, and color.

Diversify Lighting Types

Also important when designing a space is to diversify the types of lighting – mix table lamps, floor lamps, chandeliers, recessed lighting, and other types of accent lighting.  You probably will not be able to use all of these lighting sources in one room – but, you could likely use at least 2 or 3.
