DETERMINE AMOUNT OF LIGHT NEEDED

To determine the amount of lighting needs to light an entire room, a good rule of thumb is to multiply the square footage of the room by 1.5.  This gives the total amount of ambient lighting needed in terms of wattage.

If you have a room that is 10 feet x 15 feet, the square footage is 150 SF. The total wattage needed is 150 SF x 1.5  = 225 Watts

If the fixtures you want to install each have 60-watt bulbs, then you know you will need at least 4 fixtures. These fixtures will provide a total of 240 watts. When you need task lighting in a kitchen, bath, or to read or do close work – take that multiplier up to 2.5 for the area that needs the extra light, not the entire room.

PROVIDE AMBIENT AND TASK LIGHTING WITH KITCHEN CEILING LIGHTING

Kitchen ceiling lighting provide ambient (general) lighting.  Flush or semi-flush mount provide ambient light only. Chandeliers, pendant, and lanterns provide you with both ambient and task lighting. Pendants can also accent certain areas. A good kitchen lighting plan includes ambient, task, and accent lighting.
