Six Interior Design Tips Do’s and Dont’s

Interior design looks so easy when you watch all of the amazing shows on television that feature professional designers. You watch one half-hour episode as they renovate the living room and you become inspired and quite awestruck. Here are six interior design tips that can help you achieve the look you seek.

Don’t Do – Interior Design Tips

1)  Don’t mix too many patterns. Mixing multiple patterns can be really great – or really awful.  Warning Label: Use with Caution! While mixing things up is a great way to show your fun and funky side, it could be too much of a good thing – unless you know what you are doing.  In general, stick with the main piece and surround it with neutral patterns that don’t confuse the eye.

2) Don’t use no pattern or texture. On the opposite end of mixing too much pattern is the tendency to have no pattern or texture at all. When using multiple patterns and textures, make sure to mix patterns of different scales and designs.  It often works well to stick with the same family of colors, but bringing in one or two other colors can work also.

3) Don’t rely only on recessed lighting. Recessed lighting has its place. But, to give your living room a bit of style and warmth, consider a mixture of lighting sources such as table lamps, floor lamps, wall sconces, and pendants or a chandelier. They can be used to accent your theme and pull everything together: a Traditional-inspired lamp by Wildwood or something rustic by Uttermost. Plus, there’s nothing quite like the low light of a table lamp to create a relaxing mood.

Do This – Interior Design Tips

4) Do buy furniture that fits with the room. When you go into the local furniture showroom and see an amazing sectional that you just love, be sure that the measurements won’t overwhelm your space. A living room that is full of furniture with little space to walk is enough to overwhelm any of your guests, let alone the people who must live with you. Stick with a sofa that is slim and even armless if you have a small space, ditch the loveseat, and consider an armchair.  If your home is large enough, feel free to accommodate the space accordingly and get the sectional you love.

5) Do use artwork. Any type of artwork can be a statement or an accent. As an accent, consider a set of lithographs, such the Italian Garden line by Chelsea House, placed around the room sporadically or even placed leaning on accent tables for a modern look. A focal point might be a hand colored print. For featured pieces, but sure to hang them at a height your guests can see. Too high and you’ll have people craning their necks to admire them, too low and that just looks silly. An average height for artwork to be displayed is about 60-inches from the floor.

6) Do consider a collection of similar pieces. Grouped together, a few pieces that are similar in style, color, or design can look just lovely. A few vases in varying heights but matching in color can be a delightful showcase. If you have a collection of items that you adore, group them together, but don’t branch out as that can create clutter. And stay away from multiple mismatched pieces scattered and around the room and this can be overwhelming and distasteful.
