Designing your own bedroom can be a fun task. There is so much that can be done and so many ideas that can be implemented.

The bedroom is the most private room in your home and thus, in a way, the most important room as well. This is the place where we spend approximately 12 000 days of our lives. Then why not make this room our sanctuary, a room for relaxing and enjoying.

Here are some of the tips that you can consider when designing your bedroom.

Bedroom layout

Before we start doing anything in the bedroom, we should consider its layout. This is an important step as you’ll be deciding on where to place each piece of furniture so that your bedroom has enough circulating space. This means that before you commit to a certain piece of furniture you must measure your room, decide if the furniture fits nicely in the room and only then you can buy it.

A nice bedroom layout always has a bed as a focal point – that’s why you need to decide which wall will be your bedroom wall, meaning on which wall will your bed and nightstands be placed. Where will the dresser go and whether you have space for other furniture comes next?

The only thing to keep in mind is to always have enough room to circulate.

Bedroom color

Only after you have made a layout plan, you can decide on the bedroom paint color. When it comes to paint colors there is really no right or wrong – just keep in mind that small spaces are visually bigger if painted in light and bright colors. And big rooms can do well with darker wall colors.

You can always decide to paint one wall darker shade and others in lighter. Additionally, if you’re looking for something more sophisticated for your bedroom walls you can add wallpaper on your wall. Wallpapers give pattern and texture to any room, so if you want you can make your bedroom interesting and unique by adding wallpaper.

Another very popular trend is dark-colored bedroom walls. Colors like dark gray, navy and even black can make any room seem glamorous, original and mysterious. Just be careful with other colors and furniture, you wouldn’t want to make your bedroom too claustrophobic and gloomy with too many dark shades.

Your bedroom floors

Next on our list of things to consider when designing your bedroom is flooring. Typically, most bedrooms have carpets on the floor. While this is the most common situation and the easiest one, it most certainly isn’t the only one.

Yes, carpets can be a good solution as they are soft and they add warmth to our bedrooms. However, sometimes carpets just don’t go with the look and style we are trying to create in our bedrooms.

If underneath your carpet you have a nice hardwood flooring, why not put it on display? Beautiful dark wood floors can add so much character to your bedroom. And if you add beautiful and stylish bedroom rugs for added warmth and softness underfoot – ideal! Bedroom rugs can add an additional touch of personality to your bedroom and make it even cozier and relaxing.

On the other hand, if hardwood flooring is not in the cards for you, there are other options to explore. For example, you can install laminate or vinyl flooring or even stone flooring if that fits your design.

Lighting in your bedroom

Natural lighting is preferable in any room and especially in the bedroom. However, most of the time that we spend in our bedrooms is spent during the night so natural light is really not an option.

For this reason, ambient lighting in bedrooms is an ideal solution. Creating a cozy and comfortable atmosphere in the room where we will read before sleep is a must. Choose nice and stylish bedside lamps or wall sconces, you can even add a standing lamp in a corner.

Ceiling lights aren’t really necessary but if you have a high ceiling and you want to add a touch of glamour, you can add a chandelier or a nice pendant lighting that will bring the eye towards the ceiling and make your lighting a focal point. 

Choosing bed and furniture

When trying to find the right kind of furniture for your bedroom, our best recommendation is to stay away from furniture sets. In most cases, furniture sets come with many unnecessary pieces that can make your bedroom look cluttered.

Go for furniture pieces that will make your room look unique and that will complement each other nicely. If you’re having trouble finding exactly what you envisioned don’t fret. When choosing furniture, the key thing is time. Don’t rush it! Choose functionality and storage.

Start with the right bed first. If you have a small bedroom then you’re probably short of storage room. This is why choosing a bed frame that has a lot of space underneath is a good solution.

If space is not the problem, you can choose either a king or queen bed depending on what you like. The bed style will, of course, depend on your overall bedroom design. If you’re making a minimal style bedroom then wooden beds are a good idea.

And if you are aiming for something more glamorous and luxurious, your bed can have an upholstered headboard with velvet and colorful fabric.

Other furniture pieces will depend also on the room size and space, as well as on the style and design you have chosen.

At the end of the day, there is no right and wrong when it comes to your bedroom. Just follow your own design, choose what you like and stick with it. Your bedroom is your own sanctuary and as such, it can be however you want it to be.
