Bedroom Lamps or Bedside table lamps require minimal area, but have an incredible effect on the appearance and mood. Most table top surfaces in a bedroom are narrow in depth – between 16″ and 18″. Most important when choosing table lamps for bedroom is that the diameter of the lampshade is a little smaller than the narrowest dimension of the table on which it sets – so that the lampshade does not hang over the table. For a 16″ deep table, you would likely not want the shade any deeper than 15″. For this reason, oval and rectangular shape shades work well for bedside lamps. You can find the dimension of the bottom the lampshade on each of our product pages.
Most any room benefits from multiple sources of light, and the bedroom is no exception. Sometimes lighting is needed for general illumination, sometimes for specific tasks such as reading, and sometimes to create a romantic mood. There are many types of lighting for the bedroom such as bedside lamps, bedroom table lamp sets, bedroom side table lights, bedroom side table lamps, bedroom night table lamps, bedroom end table lamps, bedroom bedside table lamps, dresser lamps, desk lamps, floor lamps, sconces, and chandeliers. Below we describe a few useful tips on how best to choose the different types of lamps for your bedroom.
Bedside lamps are located on one or both sides of the bed. Often, these are matching lamps, but they do have to match. Because bedside tables are generally 16” to 20” deep, it is important to check the depth of the lampshade of any lamp that is to be placed here. You don’t want the lampshade to extend beyond the depth of the table. In most cases you will be looking for lampshades that are between 10” and 18” in depth – depending on the particular depth of your bedside table.
Table lamps that are rectangular or oval in shape often make good bedside lamps because they are wide and provide the visual mass needed to anchor each side of the bed – but are narrow enough to comfortably set on the bedside table.
Bedside Lamp Height: Another important concern in choosing bedside lamps is the lamp’s height. If the lamp is too tall, you could be looking at the bulb while you are lying in bed – and that would be a source of glare. Many bedside tables are around 28” to 30” in height. And beds are between 24” and 30” in height. A good height for bedside lamps generally ranges from about 24” to 33” (top of finial).
Occasionally, it may be desirable to go taller if you have high ceilings or low bedside tables. Also, if you have a lampshade with vertical sides (drum shade), the lamp could be taller since it may hide the bulb better than a shade that has wide slanted sides (cone shape) – when you are in a lower position than the lampshade.
Like the bedside table, bedroom dressers have narrow depths. The depth of the bottom of the lampshade should be at least a few inches narrower than the depth of the dresser. In general, the height of a dresser lamp should be 27” (top of finial) or less. Lamps with narrow bases (body) would be in the taller range and lamps with wider bases would be in the shorter range.
You may want to consider our chandeliers for the bedroom. Here is an easy rule of thumb to determine the diameter of a chandelier for a room. Add the length and width of the room together in feet and use inches: For example, you have a bedroom that 12′ wide +14′ deep = 26′. The approximate chandelier diameter would be 26”. However, for a bedroom, you may want to go a little smaller. Also, the chandelier for the bedroom should hang no lower than 6′-8” from the floor if you need to walk under it. If you are using a chandelier above a table, then the height should be much lower – and the diameter narrower.
